City of Culture celebrations get underway

News

The opening event of Hull’s City of Culture celebrations, ‘Made In Hull’, launched on Sunday 1st January to crowds of thousands.  It began with a festival of art and installations in the streets of Hull’s city centre which run for a week, the focal-point of which was Zsolt Balogh‘s beautiful projection project ‘We Are Hull’.

The crowd counted down to the launch and fell silent as they watched Hull’s history – from pilot Amy Johnson’s solo flight to Australia in 1930, through the Blitz to the present day – projected around the square onto the blank facades of the City Hall, Ferens Art Gallery and Maritime Museum.   The film featured a soundscape from sound designer Dan Jones.
