WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? was produced off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club and Jewish Repertory Theatre and on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The Mark Taper Forum commissioned BROKEN SLEEP, a one-act musical written with Michael-John La Chiusa, to accompany his long one-act, JULY 7, 1994, which itself was commissioned by Actors Theatre of Louisville and premiered in ATL’s Humana Festival of New American Plays in 1995. BROKEN SLEEP: THREE PLAYS premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 1997. Mr Margulies’ adaptation of Sholom Asch’s Yiddish classic, God of Vengeance, was commissioned by the Long Wharf Theatre, and he is currently working on a new play for South Coast Repertory.

Mr Margulies’ plays have premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club, South Coast Repertory, The New York Shakespeare Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Jewish Repertory Theatre. He has won grants from CAPS, The New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Mr Margulies has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A collection of his work, SIGHT UNSEEN AND OTHER PLAYS, has been published by Theatre Communications Group. Mr Margulies is an alumnus of New Dramatists, is a member of the council of the Dramatists Guild, and sits on the board of directors of Dramatists Play Service, Inc. He has been a playwright-in-residence four times at the Sundance Institute Playwrights’ Lab in Utah and a frequent contributor to The 52nd Street Project.

As a screenwriter he has developed scripts for Tri-Star, Touchstone, Warner Bros, Fox 2000, Universal, Geffen Productions, Showtime, HBO and NBC. He has also been working on projects for The Kennedy-Marshall Company and Propaganda Films.

Donald Margulies was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954. He lives with his wife Lynn Street, a physician, and their son Miles, in New Haven Connecticut, where he teaches playwriting at the Yale School of Drama.
