Ali was born in Belfast and studied History at Oxford University and Law at City University. She spent much of her career in the City before leaving to write full-time.

She has had original TV projects in development with Clerkenwell Films, World Productions, Headline Pictures and Little Island Productions. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the BBC Casualty Development Scheme.
