Emily Smith

Nas is a queer female writer whose modern writing subversively explores sexuality and identity, with a liberal dose of dark humour.

Her pilot script CARPET ARMS, a semi-autobiographical coming of age comedy drama about a young Scottish-Iranian woman, was commissioned as part of UKTV’s Comedy 50:50 initiative and is in development with Eleven Films. The script was a Quarter-finalist in the Screencraft 2021 TV Pilot Competition and a Semi-finalist of WeScreenplay’s 2021 Diverse Voices Competition.

Her original comedy drama about a feminist vampiric vigilante gang SUCK IT UP was commissioned by BBC and is in development with Bonafide.

Nas was previously a member of The BBC Writersroom Scottish Voices 2020/21 and was selected for The Young Film Foundation 2021/22 where she was mentored by Hania Elkington (THE INNOCENTS, FIFTEEN-LOVE) and Peter Straughan. She was previously a member of Scottish Film Talent Network Writer/Director New Voices on Screen Lab and The Edinburgh TV Festival’s Network Talent Scheme. She has been commissioned by BBC Short Stuff and worked in writers’ rooms for Beano Studios and STV.

Nas is a graduate of Screen Academy Scotland and Brooklyn College NYC before being awarded a scholarship to study at the NFTS Scotland. As a producer she has made films for The Scottish Prison Service and The National Museum of Scotland. Her debut short, HEARTS, which Nas wrote, produced and directed, screened at The Scottish Queer International Film Festival, The Scottish Short Film Festival and was winner of Campbell X’s Wahala Film Fund. Her second, IS THIS IT?, screened at Glasgow Short Film Festival and won Best Film at Girls on Film.
