Kieran Hurley & Gary McNair’s SQUARE GO receives rave reviews and Fringe First Award

Awards Theatre

Gary McNair is having a fantastic fringe. After the Cuts, his play about the dismantlement of the NHS, is darkly witty and deeply tender. And Square Go, his two-handed high-school comedy co-written with Kieran Hurley, might just be the funniest show of the festival… Hilarious and human high-school two-hander that’s just brilliant fun” The Stage *****

“As entertainment, it’s irresistible. Hurley and McNair mine a deep vein of humour in the classroom and playground, picking at the quirks and insecurities of male adolescence. The laughs are almost as loud as the cheers as Max and Stevie induct us into their world of terrifying bullies, eccentric physics teachers and old VHS tapes of wrestlers. Capturing the swagger and self-doubt of puberty, Fletcher and Wright are immensely likable performers, winning us over to their side from the start.” – The Guardian ****

Where do these male feelings of inadequacy begin? Maybe right back in the playground. Gary McNair and Kieran Hurley suggest so in the riotously entertaining Square Go” The Independent ****

“Gary McNair and Kieran Hurleys Square Go offers an entertaining glimpse inside the lives of two schoolboys …Beneath this humour however is a more pressing exploration of masculinity that gives that piece depth and raises it above being just a piece of fun.The Reviews Hub ****
