Candy Gourlay named runner-up in The Observer Graphic Short Story Prize

Candy Gourlay has been announced a runner-up in The Observer’s Graphic Short Story Prize 2023.

The annual award, run in association with Faber and Comica, offers aspiring cartoonists the chance to submit a graphic short story to be published in the Observer and win £1,000.

Now in it’s 16th year, a runner-up is also named alongside the overall winner, and we are delighted that Candy Gourlay has been named runner-up this year! Candy’s entry, SAFE PASSAGE, set in 1941, follows a family fleeing to the countryside after Japan invades the Philippines.

As runner-up, SAFE PASSAGE was published in The Observer on Sunday 5th November.

Candy is already a critically acclaimed author of titles including TALL STORY, SHINE, MIKE FALLS UP and BONE TALK, which was shortlisted for the Costa Children’s Book Award and the Carnegie Medal. WILD SONG, the sequel to BONE TALK, published earlier this year from David Fickling Books.
