Elizabeth Kuti’s THE SUGAR WIFE opens at ABBEY THEATRE, DUBLIN

News Theatre

We are delighted to announce that a revival of our talented client Elizabeth Kuti’s (Fish-Skin trousers, Treehouses, Sea Longing) award-winning play The Sugar Wife has opened at the Abbey, Dublin where it runs until Saturday 20th July. The Abbey Theatre is looking forward to welcoming back Annabelle Comyn as the director of The Sugar Wife, after last year’s widely acclaimed production of Girl on an Altar, by Marina Carr.

Set in 1850, the play explores the delicate balance at the heart of an affluent Dublin couple’s marriage after their family business is challenged by two visitors prepared to speak to the public about trade, money and slavery. Exploring the dark side of global commodities like sugar, the play asks the question: if your wealth is built on exploitation, can it really be used to build a better world?

A play at the knife edge of gender and ethnicity, this work of major of ambition highlights the tension between appearances, perception and virtue signalling, against the backdrop of a marriage and a business relying on Ireland’s challenging historic involvement in the sugar trade in the 1800s.
