Max Currie is an Emmy-winning New Zealand and British writer-director.

He directed and co-showran the transgender drama RŪRANGI, winner of the 2022 International Emmy for Best Short Form Series, which also earned him Best Director at the New Zealand Television Awards. Most recently he was set-up director on BUST UP, a New Zealand/German co-production for ZDF and SkyNZ that went to #1 on NEON in New Zealand.

His musical tragicomedy series FAT HOT MESS, in which a fortysomething gay IT worker chases his boyhood dream of music while trash-talked by a stuffed toy, is set up with Goal Post Pictures in Australia. LIFE IN SUBTITLES, a bilingual romantic comedy-drama he co-wrote with German actor-writer Odine Johne and will direct, is being set up as a New Zealand/German co-production with development funding from the NZ Film Commission and MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg. He is also attached to direct REFUGE, writer-actor Arlo Green’s debut feature set in the world of MMA, now in its third round of NZFC development.

Max cut his teeth on five years of prime-time serial drama at SHORTLAND STREET and both seasons of 12 x 1 hr comedy-drama STEP DAVE, and has recently been developing series with Sarah Lambert and Jane Manning at Lantern Pictures in Sydney.

But because life is strange and because Max’s talents sit squarely behind the camera, he is (still!) perhaps best recognised as PitCrew on RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE DOWN UNDER.
